I was kind of jealous for the other fruit which get less prominence. Furthermore, I didn't like eating them (the fruit proper, I liked apple products- strange, I know). Well, to be honest, I'm not much of a naturally fruity person- they're juicy and sticky and wet and cold and messy... sure they may taste good, but they sure don't beat chocolate!&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;IMG src="http://images.google.com/url?source=imgres&amp;amp;ct=img&amp;amp;q=http://chef2chef.net/recipes/foodservice-recipe/images/apple%2520varieties.jpg&amp;amp;usg=AFQjCNEQiUCiKpPMDnaF_ZYoVytzOBvTAQ"&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;And for the most part, I really haven't changed in my former opinion, but I have improved. Consider the words of Booker T. Washington, if you will:&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;"Think about it: We went into slavery pagans; we came out Christians. We went into slavery pieces of property; we came out American citizens. We went into slavery with chains clanking about our wrists; we came out with the American ballot in our hands... Notwithstanding the cruelty and moral wrong of slavery, we are in a stronger and more hopeful condition, materially, intellectually, morally, and religiously, than is true of an equal number of black people in any other portion of the globe."&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Yes, slavery was horrible and wrong. BUT we corrected our error and sacrificed the blood, sweat, toil and lives of more WHITE AMERICAN MEN than in any other war the US has EVER fought. And that's not including the lives of those who worked tirelessly to bring justice during the Civil Rights era. And while the slave owners of old tried to use Scripture to keep black people in chains- it was the Bible's true message of equality in Jesus Christ that motivated Americans to remove those shackels. Our uniquely Christian heritage has led to a phenomenon the non-Christian world has not followed- abolition of slavery. There are still millions of slaves around the world- but NOT in nations formed with Judeo-Christian values. There are still slaves in Africa and in Muslim nations and pagan Asian nations, but not here in America- and when we uncover the slave cartel that's trying to take root here in the US, we'll gladly trample it under. Abolition and liberty are truly a uniquely CHRISTIAN and JEWISH heritage, like it or not. And no, Mr President, we are NOT a Muslim nation. Islam is entirely incompatible with the Constitution and our fondational morals and mores. He sort of reminds me of my FIL, lol, in a loveable sort of way:)&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;So, which version is your favorite Grinch movie? I love Jim Carrey, but I'm a stickler for the animated version. It's about that time of year again for Christmas carols and trimming the tree and the holiday rush to buy gifts and visit family. So I thought I'd add my own holly jolly on here in a different approach. We often tend to shine the spotlight on the do-gooders of holiday lore- the Christ Child (duh!) and Santa and Frosty and Rudolph and St Mary and so on. But we tend to sweep under the carpet the Scrooges and bah-humbugs- the ones who need the love and the attention the most- or who just need a swift kick in the rear, as the case may be. Well, this series will give the bah-humbugs their own 5 minutes of fame because their stories and histories (as some are real historical figures) have both educational and entertainment value that's sure to be heartwarming. So grab a cuppa and snuggle under a warm blanket by your loyal compie and join me as we investigate these Christmas cranks as we ring in the holidays.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Suspect #1: Herod the Great&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The beginning is always a good place to start. Today's marshmallows are a mixture of corn syrup or sugar, gelatin, gum arabic and flavoring. &lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The candy makers needed to find a new, faster way of making marshmallows. As a result, the "starch mogul" system was developed in the late 1800s. Rather than making marshmallows by hand, the new system let candy makers create marshmallows in molds made of modified cornstarch (like jelly beans, gummies and candy corn are made today). At about the same time, mallow root was replaced by gelatin, providing marshmallows with their "stable" form. &lt;P&gt;In 1948, Alex Doumak, a marshmallow manufacturer, began experimenting with different methods of marshmallow making. Doumak was looking for ways to speed up production and discovered the "extrusion process", which revolutionized marshmallow production. I shared this in my apologetic group on ravelry and thought I'd let it double as an entry here just so you know I haven't fallen off the side of the earth.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The first is evidentialism: the key mindset is "it is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence." Ironically enough there are evidentialists on both sides of the fence- there are theistic and antitheistic evidentialists.&lt;BR&gt;The antitheist would argue:&lt;BR&gt;1. It is irrational to accept theistic belief in the absence of sufficient evidence&lt;BR&gt;2. There is insufficient evidence to support belief in God&lt;BR&gt;3. Therefore, belief in God is irrational.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The theist would counter:&lt;BR&gt;1. It is irrational to accept theistic belief in the absence of sufficient evidence&lt;BR&gt;2. There is sufficient evidence to support belief in God&lt;BR&gt;3. Therefore, belief in God is rational.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Meet Alvin Plantinga- one of the most eminent Christian philosophers of our day. Plantinga's rejection of evidentialism:&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;he challenges the underlying presupposition- "evidentialism"- that theism *needs* evidence. Against all evidentialists- theists and nontheists alike- he urges that theistic belief "can be entirely right, rational and reasonable, and proper without any evidence or argument whatsoever."&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;In a nutshell: the rationality of religious belief DOES NOT depend on the discovery of supporting arguments or evidence. (Keep this in mind- we'll deal more with this later).&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Flaws of Evidentialism:&lt;BR&gt;A reminder first of the evidentialist claim: "it is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence."&lt;BR&gt;* first it is important to note this sort of statement deteriorates epistemic thought altogether. There are many things we believe rationally without proof or evidence- such as the existence of our minds&lt;BR&gt;* this claim is self-refuting. where is the evidence for his argument?&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Foundationalism- is one of several ways of looking at such related topics as belief, rationality, and justification. According to Plantinga it is the view, "that some of our beliefs are based upon others. According to the foundationalist a rational noetic structure will have a *foundation*- a set of beliefs not accepted on the basis of others; in a rational noetic structure some beliefs will be basic. Nonbasic beliefs, of course, will be accepted on the basis of other beliefs, which may be accepted on the basis of still other beliefs... and so on until the foundations are reached." &lt;BR&gt;Every belief is either basic or derivative (nonbasic). In order for a belief to be rational it must either be a basic belief or be justified by its relation to a basic belief. &lt;BR&gt;It takes two forms- narrow and broad. Narrow foundationalism: a. within a noetic structure, some beliefs are properly basic, b. only beliefs that are evident to the sense, self-evident, or incorrigible may be properly basic.&lt;BR&gt;There is nothing wrong with broad foundationalism as it is not restrictive.&lt;BR&gt;Objections to Narrow Foundationalism:&lt;BR&gt;1. it is incompatible with much of what we know: quoting Plantinga (again) if NF is true, "then enoromous quantities of what we all in fact believe are irrational ... Relative to propositions that are self-evident and incorrigible, most of the beliefs that form the stock in trade of ordinary everyday life are not probable... Consider all those propositions that entail, say, that there are enduring physical objects, or that there are persons distinct from myself, or that the world has existed for more than five minutes; none of these propositions, I think, is more probable than not with respect to what is self-evident or incorrigible for me."&lt;BR&gt;2. NF fails its own test of rationality- it is self-referentially absurd. Look again at the thesis of foundationalism, "*that properly basic beliefs must be evident to the senses, self-evident, or incorrigible* NF fails on its own standards- it is not evident to the senses, nor self-evident nor incorrigible. It is in fact a belief the foundationalist accepts as basic without testing it by its own criteria.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The above info comes from Ronald Nash's *Faith and Reason* and I highly recommend any of his works as they are exceedingly smooth reads even for beginners.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Now on to Scientism: which is the view that science is the very paradigm of truth and rationality. If something does not square with currently well-established scientific beliefs, if it is not within the domain of entities appropriate for scientific investigation, or if it is not amenable to scientific methodology, then it is not true or rational. &lt;BR&gt;two forms:&lt;BR&gt;strong scientism: is the view that some proposition or theory is true and/ or rational to believe if and only if it is a scientific proposition or theory. There are no truths apart from scientific truths, and even if there were, there would be no reason whatever to believe in them.&lt;BR&gt;weak scientism: allows for the existence of truths apart from science and are even willing to grant that they can have some minimal, positive rationality status without the support of science. But advocates of ws still hold that science is the most valuable, most serious and most authoritative sector of human learning.&lt;BR&gt;If strong scientism is true, then theology is not a cognitive enterprise at all and there is no such thing as theological knowledge. If weak scientism is true, then the conversation between theology and science will be a monologue with theology listening to science and waiting for science to give its support. For thinking Christians, either of these alternatives is unacceptable.&lt;BR&gt;Our response:&lt;BR&gt;Strong scientism is self-refuting (don't you love it when they kick down their own defenses;)). Strong scientism is not itself a proposition of science, but a second-order proposition of philosophy about science to the effect that only scientific propositions are true and/ or rational to believe. An strong scientism is itself offered as a true, rationally justified position to believe. Self-refuting propositions are *necessarily* false- that is it's not POSSIBLE for them to be true. Thus have no fear of the world of scientific progress as it can never vindicate a false claim:):):):)&lt;BR&gt;And two more issues count against both strong and weak scientism:&lt;BR&gt;1. Neither form of scientism adequately allow for the task of stating and defending the necessary presuppositions for science itself to be practiced. Thus scientism is a foe to science. Science cannot be practiced in thin air. In fact, science itself presupposes a number of substantive philosophical theses which must be assumed if science is even going to get off the runway. The conclusions of science cannot be more certain than the presuppositions it rests on and uses to reach those conclusions.&lt;BR&gt;A list of philosophical presuppositions science relies on:&lt;BR&gt;1. the existence of a theory- independent, external world&lt;BR&gt;2. the orderly nature of the external world (tough one for the nontheist)&lt;BR&gt;3. the knowability of the external world&lt;BR&gt;4. the existence of truth&lt;BR&gt;5. the laws of logic&lt;BR&gt;6. the reliability of our cognitive ans sensory faculties to serve as gatherers and as a source of justified in our intellectual environment&lt;BR&gt;7. the adequacy of language to describe the world&lt;BR&gt;8. the existence of values used in science&lt;BR&gt;9. the uniformity of nature and induction&lt;BR&gt;10. the existence of numbers&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;2. The good Samaritan did not organize a lobby to agitate for a National Health Plan, for that has nothing to do with love for one&amp;#8217;s neighbor. Instead, he continues on about his business. Dr. C. Everett Koop, who will be our featured speaker this evening, has challenged everyone to debate political health care, and I rise to accept his challenge. Dr. Koop supports the President&amp;#8217;s Health Security Plan. Economics is at best secondary, and I shall discuss it in second place. Ethics is of greater importance. Theology is of first importance. &lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;Now what precisely are those basic values and ethics upon which our &amp;#8220;whole society is based and from which we draw our moral power?&amp;#8221; Certainly the single most important moral value &amp;#8211; the moral value that has given the United States whatever moral authority it has had and still has in the world, the moral value which has attracted tens of millions to our shores and created the most humane society of modern times &amp;#8211; is individual liberty. Individual liberty logically and historically depends on several other values, among which are the following:&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;1. &lt;I&gt;The sovereignty of God. &lt;/I&gt;In political terms this means that God &amp;#8211; not the state, society, race, class, &lt;I&gt;Volk&lt;/I&gt;, or church &amp;#8211; is the source of security. The modern idolatry of state and politics, for which the economist Ludwig von Mises coined the word &amp;#8220;statolatry,&amp;#8221; is the cause of the horrific government- caused suffering that has afflicted the modern world, making the twentieth century the bloodiest century in the Christian era. The medieval idolatry of the church, ecclesiolatry, is responsible for most of the suffering and persecution of Christians during the Middle Ages.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;2. &lt;I&gt;Limited government. &lt;/I&gt;The sovereignty of God entails the limited power and authority of all human institutions. The Constitution of the United States created a government of enumerated and limited powers. Within that government, there is a separation of powers, so that no man or department exercises all the power of even a limited government. Only God, not men, is to be trusted with power. A night-watchman state, such as that suggested by the Apostle Paul in &lt;I&gt;Romans &lt;/I&gt;13, is a basic moral value of American society.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;3. &lt;I&gt;The primacy of the individual. &lt;/I&gt;The importance of the individual &amp;#8211; rooted in the Reformation&amp;#8217;s recovery of the Bible&amp;#8217;s doctrines of individual election, individual regeneration, individual justification, individual sanctification, individual responsibility before God at the final judgment, personal immortality in Heaven (or Hell), justification by belief alone, and the priesthood of all believers &amp;#8211; is a basic value of American society. From it are derived all the various individual freedoms and protections we enjoy: religion, press, speech, association, privacy, private arms, no self-incrimination, trial by jury, no double jeopardy, and freedom of contract.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;4. &lt;I&gt;Private property. &lt;/I&gt;The mention of freedom of contract calls to mind the idea of private property. No one can seriously deny that private property is one of the basic values of both the Bible and American society. It has been under heavy attack in the twentieth century by atavistic and criminal collectivists who wish either to abolish it or to redistribute it by political means. &amp;#8220;Thou shalt not steal&amp;#8221; applies to all, both rulers and private citizens. Rulers routinely violate the commandment by taxation, expropriation, and inflation.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;5. &lt;I&gt;The Protestant work ethic. &lt;/I&gt;What Max Weber called the Protestant work ethic is itself a bundle of economic virtues: Honesty, punctuality, diligence, obedience to the Fourth Commandment &amp;#8211; six days you shall labor; obedience to the Eighth Commandment, you shall not steal; and obedience to the Tenth Commandment, you shall not covet. A recognition of the significance of productive work as glorifying God grew out of the Bible and the Reformation.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;6. &lt;I&gt;Individual responsibility. &lt;/I&gt;The Bible clearly makes each man responsible for himself, both in this world and the world to come. In economics, Paul says that he who will not work shall not eat. Paul recognized no entitlement to the property of another based on need.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;7. &lt;I&gt;Generosity. &lt;/I&gt;Perhaps no people has been as generous to those unable to help themselves as Americans. This is a consequence of two factors: Christianity and capitalism. But compassion, generosity, and capitalism have been under attack throughout the twentieth century by those who wish to substitute envy and compulsion. Compulsory charity is, of course, a contradiction in terms.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;8. &lt;I&gt;The rule of law. &lt;/I&gt;The rule of law, based upon legal principles found in the Bible, includes three major ideas: (1) that settled law, not executive decrees, regulations, or ordinances, is the only proper guide for social conduct; (2) that laws must be both clear and non-absurd, that is, capable of being understood by all and non-contradictory; and (3) that the laws apply equally to all, including rulers.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;9. &lt;I&gt;Federalism. &lt;/I&gt;Modeled on Presbyterian church government, the federal system is a system in which no government has a monopoly of jurisdiction. This division of powers, like the separation of powers, is designed to fragment political power so that it cannot threaten the lives, liberties, and property of the people.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;10. &lt;I&gt;Republicanism. &lt;/I&gt;Republicanism entails not only the idea of limited government, but the notion that monarchies are not proper forms of human government, that they are in fact rejections of divine kingship, and that proper human governments are elected by the people. It was not only the nation of Israel that sinned by asking for a king, but pagan nations around them and throughout history have sinned that way as well. &lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;These are the moral values of America, which have given America whatever moral power and authority it has enjoyed and still enjoys in the world. If we subvert or abandon these values, we will have lost both our moral power and our society. Government planning is necessarily incompatible with individual freedom and democracy. Yet he did not do so, because he was unwilling to do so, not because he was not all-powerful. Candidate John Kennedy did it in 1960 with his warnings about a &amp;#8220;missile gap.&amp;#8221; Socialist Michael Harrington and President Lyndon Johnson did it in the mid-1960s with their warnings about a poverty crisis. In the 1970s and &amp;#8216;80s it was the energy crisis. What is being discussed is not insurance at all. The notion of insurance includes insurers weighing risks, accepting or rejecting risks, and setting premiums based on risks accepted, but all are specifically forbidden by the Health Security Act. Franklin D. Roosevelt used the same tactic to get Social Security passed in 1935.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;Third, the taxes collected to fund this health security plan are not called taxes, but &amp;#8220;contributions.&amp;#8221; Of course, this is not a new misuse of language either; it is at least as old as the Social Security Act. The Health Security Act provides that &amp;#8220;Implementation involves the enactment of a statute adopting federal program standards, formation of regional health alliances, and imposition of requirements for employers and individuals to obtain coverage.&amp;#8221; Notice the phrase, &amp;#8220;imposition of requirements.&amp;#8221;&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;Finally, the biggest deception of all is &amp;#8220;equality.&amp;#8221; We know that all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others. What a politicized health care system means is that anyone with political connections or pull will get better care than those without pull. Employers began to offer health benefits as a way of providing additional compensation and attracting needed workers. One VA hospital employee described the system as &amp;#8220;Bad facilities, incompetent doctors, and medications that are ordered but don&amp;#8217;t get there.&amp;#8221; Some nurses reported that doctors did not change their gloves and routinely spread dangerous bacterial infections.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;I&gt;Primetime &lt;/I&gt;hid a camera in the room of a Vietnam veteran. According to nurses and staff the patient did not receive prompt treatment when he entered the hospital, and as a result, surgery became necessary. His family accused the hospital of failing to treat his spinal abscess in time, and now the patient is quadriplegic. The camera showed that although the food was brought to the patient, no effort was made to feed him, and he went without food for three days until another patient wandered into his room and fed him.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;Patients at the Washington, D. C., VA Medical Center sometimes &amp;#8220;walk around with a catheter for three or four months&amp;#8221; awaiting prostate surgery, states Chief of Medicine James Finkelstein. &amp;#8220;It makes them vulnerable to infection and discomfort,&amp;#8221; he says. &amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;re doing the same thing they do in Great Britain.&amp;#8221; A World War II veteran had all his upper teeth pulled by the Denver VA in September 1988, but he didn&amp;#8217;t receive his dentures until November 1989.&lt;/STRONG&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&lt;SPAN sans-serif&amp;quot; ?Arial?,&gt;&lt;SPAN 10pt&amp;quot;&gt;&lt;STRONG&gt;&lt;I&gt;The New York Times &lt;/I&gt;reported that six men treated at the VA Medical Center in North Chicago during 1989 and 1990 died due to inadequate care. Two died from undiagnosed aneurysms, one from undiagnosed heart blockage, one from hemorrhage following surgery, one from a misdiagnosed ulcer, and another from an artery nicked during prostate surgery. During one of the emergency surgeries to repair the aneurysm, the small intestine and an artery were torn by a clamp. The torn artery was not discovered until the autopsy. The man who died from heart blockage was given Maalox for indigestion.
